Course Overview
This course is designed to provide easily accessible dementia care education for Volunteers who are supporting people living with dementia or experiencing memory and thinking problems. It aims to equip you as a Volunteer with the knowledge and confidence to support you in your role and recognises the significant contribution and importance of Volunteers, especially in aged care facilities. Whilst the content refers to residential aged care, the principles and role of the Volunteers apply to all care settings.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, staff should be able to:
- Gain an understanding of common memory and thinking problems (dementia and delirium) and their impact on the person.
- Learn effective communication strategies and the importance of person-centred care.
- Identify appropriate individualised activities and approaches to engagement.
- Understand reasons for changes in behaviour and identify effective responses.
- Learn safe practical strategies when walking with or assisting residents with their eating and drinking.
